SUMMARY:Acknowledge International Pi Day
DESCRIPTION:‘Pi Day’ is an opportunity to help students learn how to solve problems in the classroom and throughout the world around them. ‘Pi Day’ is a way to engage students in a fun and timely  manner. Every teacher understands the constant challenge of making our subjects and lessons engaging for kids\, and hence acknowledging a day provides a natural hook especially for a subject like Mathematics.\n\nIdeas from students\n\n\nThe concept of Pi plays a significant role in Grade 8 Geometry and  Algebra especially. After an in-depth classroom discussion which focused on the relation of ‘Pi’ to working of any circular-shaped object\, we began to brainstorm on the methods of deriving value of ‘Pi’ and its application. Technology provided a great opportunity to engage the students and to explore how the area and volume of these various shapes are related to each other. To make it clear we started searching games and puzzles related to Pi and its applications. Then the students came up with two presentations which included an introductory video\, real working models\,  a number of puzzles and games for the audience to play.\n\nThe whole event adopted a token system which allowed the visitors to play games in exchange for tokens. Every student participated in making the ‘Pi Day’ informative and engaging actively and in the process they understood that ‘Pi’ is not equal to either 3.1415…or 22/7 and it just approximated by various methods. The students explained various methods displayed in the presentations and applications of ‘Pi’ and had a remarkable time doing so.\n\n\nLearning outcome\n\n\nCelebrating Pi day has brought us all closer to understanding the nature of our world and how inventors from centuries ago were able to understand the concept of Pi and how it works to create the circular and spherical things we use often in our life.\nStudents also learnt how Pi was approximated and tried to understand how the values (22/7 or 3.14) are used in certain places where these are values required.\n\n\n\nUltimately the ‘Pi Day’ celebration helped to students to gain clarity on how ‘Pi’ is nothing but the ratio between circumference (in some cases it is the perimeter) of any circle and its diameter.

SUMMARY:Alvin Isaac Kallicharran - former cricketer of West Indies visits our campus
DESCRIPTION:Mr Alvin Kallicharran at Akshar Arbol International School \nMarch 18th 2019 turned out to be a memorable day for the teaching and learning community at Akshar Arbol International School in Injambakkam as they had the opportunity to interact with the veteran West Indian Cricketer Mr. Alvin Kallicharran. \nMr. Kallicharran has travelled to his roots by visiting Chennai\, the city his mother was born in\, an act befitting the occasion of the release of his autobiography\, ‘Colour Blind’ which is dedicated to his mother’s memory. Interacting very joyously with the students\, Mr. Kallicharran addressed the gathering and spoke in length about his humble beginnings. Opening up about his formative years and how his passion for cricket led him to brave all obstacles\, Mr. Kallicharran insisted on the need to be ambitious at a young age. He stressed on the importance of choosing any sport of one’s liking and striving with dedication to excel in it. He went on to talk about the need to be a quick thinker and decision maker\, to be hungry for success\, to adopt positivity in one’s approach and to always have a role model in life to drive oneself towards one’s aspirations. Mr. Kallicharran’s heartfelt and powerful speech concluded on a note of warning wherein he insisted the students to never take a shortcut to attaining one’s goals as it will always lead to mediocrity but to work hard which\, despite being time consuming\, will surely help one attain lasting success. \nThe speech was followed by the felicitation of Mr. Kallicharran by Mr. R. Subramanian\, the school Chairman. To mark this event Mr. Kallicharran planted a sapling in the school campus in line with the school’s vision of building a green campus. \nMr. Kallicharran graciously posed for photographs with the students\, signed several bats and handed out autographs to eager students. In light of his upcoming 70th birthday on the 21st of March\, the event drew to a close with a cake cutting and birthday song. A fitting end to the great event\, Mr. Kallicharran took to the ground and dexterously batted for nearly two overs much to the delight of the onlookers. \n
